A Minnesota State Fair tradition since 1965, the crop art competition is iconic and extraordinary. Artists young and old use toothpicks and glue to create intricate mosaics made with seeds grown in Minnesota. More than 300 entries are showcased each year during the State Fair. In a tribute to the “growing” popularity of this uniquely Minnesota competition, renowned crop artist Liz Schreiber was commissioned to create the 2023 Minnesota State Fair Official Commemorative Art.
Schreiber, who works professionally in a variety of mediums, has entered the crop art competition every year since 2004, winning nearly 30 ribbons. Her 2023 commemorative artwork took 300 hours to complete and portrays her fair favorites: Corn is a big theme – roasted corn and corn dogs – plus antique tractors, cattle and the quintessential Ferris wheel. Schreiber’s handmade frame evokes the State Fair’s nightly fireworks display.
Of the 29 varieties of seeds used in her richly detailed mosaic, Schreiber opted to use one non-Minnesota seed since the artwork is not entered into competition. “I was given a giant jug of palm seeds by my friend’s mom who had saved them for me in a jar labeled ‘for Nancy’s friend.’ I thought that was really sweet and that this would be a good opportunity to use them.”
Known as the Great Minnesota Get-Together, the Minnesota State Fair is one of the largest expositions in the world, welcoming 1.8 million guests each year. This premier showcase of agriculture, art and industry is “Always 12 Days of Fun Ending Labor Day.”
