Feb. 25, 2025 - March 1, 2026
Gilding Light by Minnesota-based artist Cynthia Fleury is a visual display that merges photography with the art of gilding. This work captures the essence of shape, light, and form from Fleury's travels, culminating in metallic pieces that boast a three-dimensional aspect and reflect light in an almost mystical manner.
These photographs were created using one of two techniques: Printing on translucent vellum or chemical film transfers to glass. Each piece is then meticulously gilded with 24kt gold or sterling silver leaf. The creations are small, inviting close inspection and rewarding viewers with grand scenes celebrated in shimmering color. They have often been described as elegant, luscious, and gem-like, reminiscent of daguerreotype prints from the 1830s, an early photographic process that utilized metal in its development.
