“Chorus” by Minnesota-based artist Alexandra Beaumont honors the freedom and power of the dance floor. A reflection on bodies moving to music under pulsing lights, “Chorus” swirls together layers of color with painted, photographed, and embroidered figures. Each dancer subtly depicted is a family member or friend of the artist, underscoring Beaumont’s focus on community celebration as a source of sustenance and joy. The twelve by forty-eight-foot artwork is comprised of thirty-six squares of hand-sewn textile collages. Beaumont evokes scintillating lights by using various cloths of different lusters, textures, and translucencies, hung loosely to sway in the space. Vibrant abstract colors shift hues and saturation, inviting the gaze to dance across the piece, pausing on an expressive hand or soulful face.
“When I witness other’s joy, I feel activated to help build a world that protects it,” says Beaumont. “I hope that ‘Chorus,’ as an homage to our joy and connectedness, compels its viewers to join too - in celebration and solidarity.”
“Chorus” invites us to embrace the euphoric force of collective social dancing, as we honor the potential revolutionary power of our bodies.
