Vicki finds inspiration in the delicate, complex beauty of flowers. From the windswept landscapes of Tibet and Patagonia to the deserts of Botswana, the fjords of New Zealand, and to our very own Minnesota Arboretum, her process begins in the field where she sketches and photographs each plant in its natural habitat. Back in her Minneapolis studio, she transforms these studies into vivid works of art using dyes on silk, a medium known for both its difficulty and its luminous quality. Originally trained in botanical watercolor, Vicki turned to silk painting to more fully capture the essence of her subjects. Silk reflects both the fragility and strength of a flower’s petals. By rendering each bloom larger than life, she invites viewers to slow down and notice what we often overlook: The fine hairs along a stem, the intricate layering of a petal, the precise architecture of a stamen.
