Walt Wali Neil’s Rhinoceros Drawing is an iconic representation of Wali’s masterful illustration and composition skills. Each figure and concept is seamlessly woven into the fabric of the whole. The young boy and the smaller rhino are intricately linked by what seem to be blood vessels, while the rhino’s body blends into clouds and birds of the sky. They represent the interdependence we have with our natural world. This combination of different scenes at different scales, such as the elephants and the zebras, lends an ethereal quality to the composition and suggests different perspectives from which one can view the same landscape. This original ink and wash drawing offers viewers a portrait of beauty and a warning sign of what could be lost if we do not plan for our future communities and the natural world.
