Excerpt from artist’s Impact Statement: “My artwork is a depiction of one of the most memorable events in Shoemaker's life, the discovery of a comet, named Shoemaker-Levy 9, which went down in history as the first comet to be observed colliding with a planet. Composition wise, the luminescent particles connect the foreground to the background, shifting the focus to the room. The dark foreground that contrasts against the bright spectacle of the night sky serves to emphasize the focal point further. The globe is a token of the impact of Shoemaker's research achieved by his dedication. The Microscope and figurines are mementos of Shoemaker's life, inspired by real-life photographs.”
