Excerpt from artist’s Impact Statement: "The cacti symbolize Ralph Lazo’s Mexican roots as well as the fact that Manzanar was in the deserted valleys of California where cactus tend to grow. I drew bamboo in order to symbolize the Japanese prisoners. The combination of these two is meant to represent the way Lazo crossed the racial boundaries set by America during World War II."
