Excerpt from artist’s Impact Statement: "Due to Gene Shoemaker’s health problems, he was tied to Earth and was not able to physically see the subject of his life’s work closer than looking through a telescope, so I wanted to represent what he was confined to. In the sky the Jupiter and colliding comet symbolize his historic discovery of Shoemaker-Levy comet."
