Excerpt from artist’s Impact Statement: "[Sylvia Mendez] was denied access to education (higher learning and literacy) by the printed word and her case was fought in court and then used to strengthen other cases by means of the printed word. I wanted to use words in my own work to show their power. I used torn up pieces of magazines in the hope that I could show how pieces of ripped up paper can be glued together and layered into one unified whole, not unlike what Mendez did. "
