In his records, Lartigue himself titled and dated this stunning image as "Automobile Delage, Grand Prix de l’Automobile-Club de France, Le Tréport, 26 juin 1912".
However, the vehicle in this gem of a capture isn't a Delage but is actually a Théophile Schneider race car. In addition it didn't compete in 1912, but in the following year. The Grand Prix was run in 1913 on the circuit of Dieppe, and while No. 6, a Schneider driven by a M. Croquet, was a favorite, it was actually the Peugeot, with the ace driver Georges Boillot at the wheel, that won, at speeds reaching over one hundred miles an hour. Swinging his camera parallel to the road in a movement that followed the car, Lartigue barely managed to catch the speeding machine in his frame. Sweeping trees and spectators in its wake, the car rushes onward with the single-minded urgency of the new age.
This is a genuine vintage photogravure, printed in in 1972. Mounted on acid-free board, matted to 8"x10" and in a black wooden frame.
