Haunting work, superficially of a child peacefully playing with the toy red planes of the title. On closer inspection we see that the box of toy planes are in pieces, which the child may have broken themselves. Through a curtain we see a landscape with a metropolis being destroyed by an earthquake, and there are signs of fragility in places where Hosie has worried the piece. This iconic work has many of Hosie's trademark motifs, all reflecting his sense of the political environment of the times, with youth unwittingly destroying society. Featured in Hosie's solo exhibition marking the opening of the Raab Gallery in London in 1987.
