Stunning publicity photo from RKO Pictures, taken by studio photographer Bachrach. His embossed stamp can be seen bottom right.
Copenhagen-born Gwili Andre (1907 - 1959) began her career as one of the first great fashion models in her native Denmark then in the US, appearing on dozens of magazine covers. Brought to Hollywood in 1932, when this picture was taken, she was nicknamed "the second Garbo". However, her remarkable beauty did not transfer to the screen, and her contract was canceled after only three films. She only made a handful of movies and she never recovered from the collapse of her Hollywood career. Years later, in an alcoholic stupor, she was unable to save herself from a fire in her small Venice Beach apartment. Newspapers reported that her magazine covers and photographs were scattered over the surrounding lawns by firemen trying to quell the flames.
This is a genuine vintage photogravure, printed early 80's. Matted to 16" x 20" in a stunning vintage heavy moulded black wooden frame.
