The zither player is the most famous Emperor of the Song Dynasty. Schoolchildren across China are taught about the artist-Emperor who lost everything due to his love of art. Perhaps that's why it looks more like a self-portrait of the artist, Hong Lei?
This stunning work is full of fascinating details, from the Yves Klein sculpture in the foreground, the keys in the hanging man's belt, the dragonflies and the nuclear cloud in the background. Once hung, this arresting, beautiful piece literally stops people in their tracks and draws the viewer in.
