This multi-layered, mixed media drawing is a direct response to the Stravinsky score for “A Soldier’s Tale.”
A close listening of the music spontaneously informed and guided my imagery. There are 9 separate layers of drawings, each made in response to the 9 sections of the musical suite. The essence of the story cycles upon itself, not via a literal interpretation (ie; an image of the devil or a violin), but through a sensory experience (ie; an image created in response to musical sound, in time). My goal was to create layers of meaning and depth through the physical layering of multiple, semi-transparent mixed-media gestures.
A narrative emerges abstractly, with line, color, form and space interweaving in a “musical” sense. The complexity of The Soldier’s Tale story, suggested through instrumentation in the musical interpretation, inspired my process; to build a single image from marks made on multiple layers of duralar, using the musical development as a primary source.
