High in the Eastern Sierra I wander amongst the granite boulders, quartz shards, miniature wildflowers and persistent lichens. Once in awhile there is a tree, stunted by marginal conditions, its roots clinging to a seismic past. Although its skeleton petrifies with time, I do not see it fall. Rather, it maintains its skyward reach as if propelled by a churning volcanic eruption.
