I've considered doing a self-portrait for years. I wanted something that would represent the evolution of my life and did studies using a variety of approaches in pursuit of what might work best. This painting using ribbons to show threads of memories. Each ribbon captures key aspects per decade. The ribbons run over my head and run into my spirit manifesting in the shapes on my face and neck.
After finishing the painting, I decided one of the ribbons actually serves a dual purpose since some of the shapes reminded me of hieroglyphics. I was always fascinated with the ancient Egyptians, doing a report on hieroglyphics in grade school. Later, I went on to study anthropology, including archaeology, ancient cultures and modern cultures, long before switching to a path in electrical engineering and semiconductor design. The metal paths in semiconductors have similar geometric and graphic shapes as in hieroglyphics. So one ribbon actually depicts my late teens and 30's, which was a wonderful surprise. I won't share the meaning behind other ribbons so you can enjoy your own interpretation.
Arrives with a brushed silver frame.
