Yasmeen was never a loud woman. She didn’t raise her voice. She rarely even laughed loudly. Her power came in quiet forms, the way she cleaned the floor with the edge of her long dress, the way she rationed rice to last the week, the way she pulled her children’s heads to her chest when bombs fell. Yasmeen had three children: Amal, age 10; Yusuf, 7; and little Lina, just 2 years old. Her husband, Ziad, had been killed in an airstrike in 2021. Since then, she had carried her family like a fragile glass jar, always close, always careful, always one tremor away from shattering.
