The upper Gallatin River in Montana flows swiftly yet shallowly through the beautiful Gallatin Valley in the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park. I started this painting late one September afternoon while watching our friends, Marty & Fran Herring, struggle to fish the difficult water. I was struck by how patient and persevering Marty was as he plied his craft. Finally, he caught one, and as always, kindly returned the pisces to the cold waters.
