The story behind this painting, Golden Grasslands, began last summer when Todd and I went bicycling early one morning in Litchfield, South Carolina. We came upon an overlook and stopped. The scene was magnificent! Early morning sunrise over the grassy marshlands. It was stunning. Even Evelyn, tucked in her bike trailer, had to get out to catch a glimpse of the changing colors in the sky. Pink being her favorite color, she got a little excited! We all decided I needed to take pictures on the spot to capture the moment to paint later on. And that's exactly what I did. The gold leaf being the star of the horizon line.
We spend a week each summer with my grandmother at her condo in Litchfield by the Sea. I grew up going to Pawley's Island every summer with family..sometimes nearly 20 of us in a house! I have the best memories! One memory in particular that this painting evokes is when my grandfather would take me on his shoulders to check the crab traps on the bay side. I was always excited to be with him on the 'tall grasses' side of the house and also feared a crab would bite me, so he would always carry me.
