Statement
Cold wax and encaustic are my vehicles for translating inner vision to outer reality.
Though I consciously employ traditional techniques and materials to bring my ideas into physical form, my unconscious definitely guides the process. I’m primarily inspired by nature: sky, earth, ice, rain, flowers, and I synthesize these elements and experiences into imagery that’s more subtle and abstract. I layer pigmented medium to create a textural history and occasionally incorporate print or collage materials to add layers and depth. I often use surface treatments to reveal aspects of these layers deep below the surface. Intentional and accidental take turns as the process unfolds.
My life has revolved around art and creative endeavors. I’ve enjoyed a +30 year career as a graphic designer using my sensibilities and skills to create books, marketing materials, and identity programs for publishers and corporations. As an artist, I engage these same abilities but have the added freedom of infusing my work with inspiration found all around me.
Creating art is the most powerful response I know of to living in this world. The process allows me to communicate thoughts and feelings, the passage of time, and the experience of moving through and observing our incredible world — from the monumental to the minute — in a form that‘s unbound from words, yet which speaks to everyone.
