This life-sized embroidery is based on a single leaf from my own Monstera Deliciosa plant at home. Stitched entirely by hand using a domestic sewing machine and freemotion technique, it was built up on water-soluble fabric which was later rinsed away, leaving only thread. The final piece has no backing and holds its shape independently.
Mounted slightly off the backing board, the leaf casts shifting shadows that respond to light throughout the day, echoing the quiet movement of a living plant.
Every vein, edge, and split is formed from layered thread alone. I wanted to replicate how real leaves are suspended from their stems and to push the structural potential of embroidery, staying true to both the botanical form and the nature of the material.
