Sky and Earth

Anika Rowe at Ground Floor Contemporary

Sky and Earth

I'm excited to be part of Sky and Earth, a group exhibition opening this month at Ground Floor Contemporary in Birmingham. The show explores how contemporary artists navigate the space between the terrestrial and the celestial—the grounded and the transcendent—in their work.

For this exhibition, I'm presenting two recent oil paintings that delve into memory and the natural world as a repository for our interior lives. The Ones Who Run With Her follows a solitary figure moving through a dreamlike landscape, accompanied by wolves who serve as both protectors and witnesses. What the Magpies Remember continues this exploration through birds—creatures that move between earth and sky, carrying secrets and memories across time.

Both paintings use warm, earthy palettes interrupted by bold geometric forms in vibrant orange and blue. These shapes act as visual disruptions, much like how memories surface unexpectedly, fragmenting our sense of linear time. The figures in these works exist in contemplative stillness, caught between movement and rest, between remembering and forgetting.

The Sky and Earth exhibition brings together artists whose work addresses our relationship with the natural world and our place within it—questions that feel increasingly urgent. I'm honored to show alongside such thoughtful voices, and I'm curious to see how our different approaches to these themes will create a dialogue across the gallery space.
