Created for the show at New Puppy Gallery in Los Angeles called the "Wisdom Within Us." The Margay wildcat is one of many species endangered in Costa Rica due to poaching and habitat loss. Although it was once listed as “Vulnerable” to extinction by the IUCN, they have downgraded their status to “Near Threatened”. Because the Margay is completely arboreal (lives in trees) it is much more susceptible to habitat destruction than those cats that can live in variable habitats.
The original painting is still available.
I painted the Margay in the 17th century style of the memento mori Dutch artists as an homage to it's struggle to exist in a world every changing and influenced by humanity and as a reminder of mortality.
