SAGA #1: Trans-Jen is the first mosaic in the series I am creating: "See, America is Great Already (SAGA)." A saga is defined as "a long story of heroic achievement" or "a very complicated or detailed series of events." The SAGA series of mosaics illustrates the positive events and achievements that have made America great, such as LGBTQ+ rights. Jenny is my transgender cousin who is an activist on many fronts and I am so proud of her. First off, she is relentless in her fight to be part of the Catholic church. She has served in many ways (starting over 3 years ago), including greeting, proclaiming scriptures (lectoring), and ushering during masses, along with serving on the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) and many other ministries and just being around whenever they needed her. However, there had been several complaints inside and outside her parish about her as a transgender person being a “distraction” to them as she was lectoring and “What message does that put out to others?” She was devastated when the Sacramento diocese finally decided, despite support from her parish, that she could no longer perform any of those ministries during the mass or any other leadership positions, including PPC. That fight, of course, continues. Secondly, Jenny fights for the rights of not only transgender people, but for all Americans who are suffering from the attitudes, actions, and policies of the Trump administration. She makes sure everyone possible is informed about ways in which to protest. Lastly, Jenny has to tolerate insensitive, ignorant Americans that cannot accept her as she is: A human being. Thank you Jenny, for the ongoing fight.
