Designed by Ben Genaux and cast at the Jules Fonson Foundry, Brussels: cast bronze memorial plaque commemorating the August 8, 1956 Bois du Cazier coal mining disaster in Marcinelle, Belgium, at which 262 miners were killed. Sculpture depicts a pieta scene in which a shrouded figure cradles the lifeless body of a miner.
Translation of attached letter:
"It was not possible for you to attend the ceremony of June 20, during which the Communal Council of Marcinelle gave the medal of the Recognition to the persons and groups which have particularly devoted themselves during the disaster of coal mining of the Bois du Cazier.
We were therefore unable to give you the plaque that is intended for you.
We have the honor to send you this plaque which we ask you to accept with our warm congratulations and the expression of our gratitude.
Please accept, Mr. Demolder, the assurance of our distinguished consideration."
