1/6 plate ambrotype depicting Mayland Cuthbert (1838-1906) of Philadelphia, Scranton, Pennsylvania and Edgewater Park, New Jersey. Cuthbert became second assistant engineer in the United States Navy. He was previously wounded while serving as third assistant engineer aboard the Mohican in November 1861 at the Battle of Port Royal. Cuthbert resigned honorably from the Navy in August 1864 after a few health situations.
