Armor is what it has taken to navigate rape culture, the patriarchy, ableism, and objectification. I used to wear it all the time, but have found spaces of safety in which I can remove the armor with little risk of attack. The armor is mounted on a bloodied panel representing the harm done before it was formed. Nor is the armor pristine as it represents the extensive battles experienced, not all won. I love the larger scale of this piece. The armor is life size.
Encaustic painting on a cradled birch panel. Origami tessellation attached with magnets.
The tessellation was folded on silver craft paper in Paris in 2019, rolled up and stuffed in a tube, and then hung in my studio since. It’s been an experiment to see how the folds hold up to gravity with various types of paper. This craft paper maintained all the folds beautifully.
