I found the reference photo for this art piece on an old camera roll. I was inspired by children’s picture book art to recreate the photo as a collage. The people featured in the piece include myself, my siblings, and a number of our close friends growing up. This piece evokes a ton of nostalgia for me and represents fundamental characteristics of my childhood community.
I used origami paper and newspaper to bring the background to life. The origami paper was reminiscent of one of our favorite indoor activities: paper folding. I used pages from our local paper to represent our community and our home. I experimented with different patterns and colors to create connections between certain people who share close relationships in real life. I cut up scraps of our old clothes and used different colors to represent a certain aspect of each
person’s character.
