Artist Statement:
Mami Luz is a tribute to my grandmother, someone who has been a constant presence in my life and a key part of my cultural identity. When I started my portfolio, I knew I wanted to include my family, and she was the first person who came to mind. I had never drawn her before, so this
piece became a way to show my appreciation and love for her.
I chose colored pencils as my medium because, at the time, it was what I enjoyed using the most. My goal was to make the drawing as true to life as possible, capturing not only her
likeness but also the warmth and wisdom she carries. The detailed layering of colors helped me bring depth and emotion to her portrait, making it feel even more personal.
This piece holds deep meaning for me because my grandmother has played such an important role in shaping who I am. She has always kept me connected to my roots, and through this artwork, I wanted to honor that. Mami Luz is more than just a portrait—it is a reflection of the love, gratitude, and cultural awareness that she has passed down to me.
