The man closest to the viewer is old and alone and has already ordered, eaten, and paid for his meal in the diner, which serves as a metaphor for the world as a whole. He holds an obituary and waits for his money to be taken. The younger couple, featuring a pregnant woman, has ordered but has not been served, representing their earlier place in the stages of life. Though both subjects find themselves in vastly different positions, they remain in the same diner, through the same lens, showing our collective existence in the world though we may seem disconnected at times.
