When Climate change threatens the natural world, people tend to focus on the larger components–tall trees, popular plants, and attractive animals–while ignoring the smaller creatures. However, these “little guys” play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy planet. A Bug’s Life highlights the importance of insects and bugs which are often overlooked despite their vital impact on the planet. The collage is made from National Geographic magazine pieces and with background text referencing climate change and human impact. The collage is made up of smaller parts to create a big message that symbolizes the larger impact that small insects and bugs have on our vast Earth. To make the bugs stand out, Serena drew them separately with colored pencils and carefully placed them under and escaping from the boot, with some crushed to show society’s disregard for them. As an artist, every detail counts, just like every insect and bug matters to society at large. That is why this piece is so essential to understanding the bigger picture.
