Sculpted Relief Painting

Mount Blackmore-Ferdinand Hayden, head of the USGS Survey of Yellowstone, named this mountain near Hyalite in 1872 to honor Mary Blackmore.
Mary was the wife of William Blackmore, an English philanthropist, and a financial backer of Hayden. The young couple came to tour Yellowstone as guests of Hayden and to accompany him during the Hayden Survey of Yellowstone Park 1872, but Mary contracted pneumonia and returned to Bozeman and stayed in the care of a local family, where she died that summer. Husband William was grateful for the kind care of his wife and bought land east of town for a cemetery which he donated to the town, and it is known as Sunset Hills. Mary’s pyramidal granite headstone is there and stands as a reflection of her mountain.
