The title of the Family Portrait limited series is derived from the story of Sokolov's close friends, a lesbian couple from Moscow, Russia, who were denied the opportunity to adopt a child due to their LGBT status.

The artist was moved by the couple's experience, imagining that their family portrait would always include just two of them due to society's prejudices.
