Buildings looming overhead and blocking most of the sky: That was my experience of how my environment shifted when I moved from Texas to New York soon after college. Living in that city helped me understand how the most basic things--light, movement, sky and ground--can not only change a person's mood and daily rhythms, but also her view of the world. Making large paintings with rigid vertical lines was a way to organize the sensory input of that place.
