Created during my September 2025 residency with the Pouch Cove Foundation in Newfoundland, these paintings on paper are Inspired by Mistaken Point, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where thousands of the earliest known animal fossils are exposed on cliff sides facing the Atlantic. The simple shapes embedded in those slabs resemble plants or geological formations. But they're actually animals who survived 50 million years of volcanic eruptions before a final extinction event about 530 million years ago.
Each painting in this series features colors from the cliff-lined landscape. Manny is the OG fossil, the first weirdo animal. I imagine his conical form mirroring hues of the gazillion blueberries growing wild along the coastal trail, while the liquid gold of a sunset ocean surrounding his fossilized resting place.
In this ongoing series, I imagine their simple beginnings and their future forms as they diversify, evolve, and migrate.
