Persephone's abduction by Hades to the underworld caused despair in her mother, Demeter, and thus the withering of the growing things of the Earth. In the myths negotiations and trickery result in Persephone being above and below the Earth for six months each out of the year and so there are seasons as Demeter's joy and sorrow wax and wane.
