These poems are inspired by traditional Japanese haiku and classical Chinese poetry. Haiku in its pure form always refers to the season while making small observations about the natural world and the poet's place in it. Classical Chinese poetry also marries observation of the natural world with reflection on the inner state. I wrote these poems because I wanted to leave something behind for the people who helped me during my residency- the rangers and the staff of the park. I also hope these poems will be enjoyed by the other AIRIE fellows who come after me.
