Diana Eusebio's work explores natural dye color schemes inspired by the three places she calls home: Miami, Peru, and the Dominican Republic. She draws from her Afro-Indigenous (Peruvian Quechua) heritage, researching traditional plants and insects used to create dyes and color fabrics. Some of the dyes she uses include avocado and cochinilla for pinks and reds, Spanish moss, pericon, bija, and cempazuchil for yellows and oranges, and indigo for blues. Eusebio often sources these materials directly from the landscapes and mercados of Latin America and Miami.
Her pieces incorporate archival photographs or recent images she's taken during her experiences with family and the landscape. These photographs are digitally printed on cotton fabric and dyed using natural pigments, creating a chemical reaction between man-made ink and organic materials. This fusion of modern technology and ancestral textile techniques reflects her exploration of both tradition and innovation.
Inspired by her 2023 AIRIE Indigenous Fellowship, Eusebio created Spanish Moss Yellow (2023). During her month-long residency in Everglades National Park, she developed a yellow dye from the Spanish Moss plant, often studying a tree near the Anhinga Trail draped in the moss. The final pieceβ photograph of the plant printed on cottonβ is tinted with natural dye made from Spanish Moss harvested in Miami.
Her work is fueled by preservation of indigenous plant and textile knowledge through the exploration of colors offered by the natural landscape.
