This ceramic relief sculpture made by hand-forming and slip-casting clay into molds features textures and forms like roots from the Royal Palm as well as leaf textures that can be found in the Everglades. A single citrus fruit pays homage to the agriculture communities that settled in South Florida in the late 1800s while the cast coral speaks to the ancient coral reef that South Florida sits upon: oolitic rock. The citrus and coral and context call upon the clash of industry and nature so prevalent in Florida.

I chose this light blue palette because my residency term was in Februaryโ€š the winterโ€š and the colors were less saturated; you could see the sky through the bare cyprus trees.
