The term 'inside-out and upside down' has it's own specific meaning in that it signifies a world in which all sense of normality has been challenged. Making sense of life becomes difficult when it has been turned inside out. The title of this painting is based on this phrase as I have always been fascinated by the dichotomy between in the 'inside' and the 'outside'. For me the 'inside' includes the environments in which we live and which provide shelter and safety. It is linked to internal feelings as well as a sense of spirituality which is not evident on the outside. The physical 'outside' on the other hand is the realm into we venture only for relatively short periods of time. It does not provide as much security, but informs our 'inside' spaces as well as our internal world. It is difficult to make sense of it all, that is why meaning is often veiled and unclear.
In this painting, internal spaces and external spaces merge so as to form a new space.
