Artist: Mike Giant (American, b. 1971)
Mike Giant draws on his interests in American subcultures, tattoos, and street art to create his black-and-white drawings, photographs, and screenprints. Regardless of medium, Giant almost always employs black contour lines, a nod to his admiration for Mexican folk art and Japanese illustration. He began drawing at a young age and was offered an apprenticeship with prominent tattoo artist Nalla Smith in 1998. About a year later, he began working as a full-time tattoo artist, and went on to work in notable tattoo shops throughout the United States. Giant’s propensity for documenting subcultures—including skaters and BMX bikers—has led him to embrace a spirit of rebellion and an anti-establishment view that is present throughout his artistic practice. Yogini (2019) shows a figure seated in a meditative position, with her legs crossed and her hands on her knees. The subject—depicted in black ink on a white background—is covered in tattoos, excluding her face.
