Angel Hui Hoi Kiu is a contemporary ink painter based in Hong Kong. She received her BA (Hons) in Visual Arts from the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2014, and Master of Arts in Experimental Art with Distinction at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2017. She has held various exhibitions and received overwhelming response of her latest project of “Plastic Bag Rethink” at Art Basel Hong Kong (2022) and Art Central Hong Kong (2023).

Hui has a strong interest in reinvestigating the value of existing objects. Her works exhume meanings of daily, mundane materials, such as plastic bags, paper clips, facial tissue and rice paper, and re-infuse them with new and unpredictable associations and perceptions.

Plastic bags are widely used every day in Goldfish Market (Tung Choi Street), a street market in Hong Kong selling marine fish, tropical freshwater and vivarium, where a variety of fish are displayed in transparent, oxygen-filled plastic bags. This inspired Angel to think along the usage of these plastic bags: can new usages be bestowed upon such single-use bags? Can traditional hand embroidery go beyond fabric?

To prove this concept, Angel collaborated with artists in China to hand embroider delicate and soulful fish on plastic bag. Her innovative concept and the embroiderers' involvement serve as a meaningful dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art. It has also led us to question the definition and social role of daily objects, and how we could create more sustainable and responsible art.
