In this piece, I choose to paint Melnea Cass, who was a civil rights activist and a community organizer in Boston. I chose to paint Melnea Cass because she made a big impact on the Boston community by helping others and making a change for over six decades. Melnea Cass helped black women have the opportunity to vote, she helped fight to desegregate Boston Public Schools, she also fought for the rights of domestic workers. She was known as the “First lady of Roxbury”. She is important to our local history because she has fought for the rights of the people who were suffering which she is honored for her civil rights activism.
