Plate, 8.75x8.675 inches. Blue transfer with gilding. The printed mark on the back identifies the maker as Blair & Co. The simple center image of an Oriental vase on a pedestal, and a gnarled flowering tree branch are the featured motifs in this pattern. Plants to the right side include bamboo and tall grass as well as the ornate fence extending from the pedestal add more interest. The central pattern is strongly reinforced with the dramatic dense border of geometric and stylized floral shapes. There are eight segments of border elements with two definitely darker backgrounds at the top and bottom segments.
Blair & Co. was a china manufacturer at the Beaconsfield Pottery, Anchor Road, in Longton, Staffordshire, England. The partners of the previous firm Beck, Blair & Co. were John Beck, Henry Beck, William Robert Blair, Thomas Bakewell, and George Bakewell. In November 1879, John and Henry Beck left the business, which continued as Blair & Co.
