Tile, 6 x 6 inches. Brown transfer. Makers mark for Minton, Hollins & Co. This pattern, registered on 25 September 1880, is one in a series of 12 patterns with four scenes centered around a cartouche. This pattern features scenes of a kingfisher perched over water, a young girl sitting in a field, a landscape with a windmill, and flowering branches, divided by a diagonal band decorated with stylized flowers and a partial cartouche filled with stylized foliage. The border consists of a thin geometric band with a quarter roundel featuring a partial stylized flower in each corner.
Herbert Minton entered into partnership with Michael Hollins in 1845 and formed the tile-making firm of Minton Hollins & Co. They were the most famed and prolific manufacturers - for most of the Victorian era their tiles were used in The Palace of Westminster (The UK Houses of Parliament), U.S. Capitol, Victoria & Albert Museum, and many other prestigious buildings.
