Plate, 8 inches diameter. Green transfer. Printed maker's mark for Wallis Gimson & Co. Printed retailer's mark for M. B. & Co. The Rd. No. indicates a pattern registration date of (27 May) 1884. Patterns in "The World" series all feature two or more cartouches, each with a separate world-renowned city, building, architectural feature, or monument paired with flowers. Here the left side consists of orchids, prunus blossoms, and ferns with a butterfly. On the right is a large, rectangular cartouche framed with twigs that features a view of the Lieutenant Governor's Residence in Toronto. The building was built in 1868 as a grand vice-regal residence in downtown Toronto, and was designed in the Second Empire style. The circular cartouche features an image of the Boston Custom House. The building was designed in a Neoclassical style by architect Ammi Burnham Young. This building was a cruciform (cross-shaped) Greek Revival structure that combined a Greek Doric portico with a Roman dome design resembled a four-faced Greek temple, topped with a dome.
Wallis Gimson & Co. specialized in making ware in series such as ‘The World’ and ‘Achievements of Notable Victorians.’ In February the partnership between Joseph Gimson Jr. and Thomas Wallis Gimson was dissolved and Thomas W. Gimson continued on his own account. At the time of bankruptcy of the business it was Thomas Wallis Gimson who was trading as Wallis Gimson & Co.
