Plate, 10 inches diameter. Black transfer with polychrome clobbering. Printed maker's mark for Read & Clementson. This boldly-colored pattern features a group of the eponymous bluish-purple pea blossoms in the center and a wide border consisting of a continuous vine of similarly-colored pea blossoms bordered on the outside by a solid swath of bright orange and a small continuous line of circles.
Joseph Clementson was born on 15 July 1794 at Carrigill, Cumberland. He came to the Potteries in 1811 and worked first as a collier. In 1820 he apprenticed himself to J. and W. Ridgway, and by 1832 was able to set up his own business at the Phoenix Works, Shelton, in partnership with Jonah Read. The partnership ended in December 1839 and Joseph Clementson continued on his own account as J. Clementson.
