Platter, 11.5 x 9 inches. Green transfer. Printed maker's mark for British Anchor Pottery Co. Ltd. The Rd. No. dates the registration of this pattern to 1884. Appropriately, the pattern name "Paroquet" is an obsolete British word for "parakeet." This pattern features a large grapevine with leaves and fruit at the top of the platter. A parrot perches on the vine to the left next to a picture-frame cartouche hanging from the vine. The cartouche image depicts a castle on top of a cliff overlooking water with mountains in the background. At the bottom of the platter are two additional sprigs of grapevine with fruit. The large of the two contains another perched parrot. The border consists of a simple gilded line.
J. T. Hudden established a factory at the British Anchor Works in Anchor Road, c.1874-1884. He was recorded as an 'important manufacturer.' In 1881 Hudden was 65 years old and his works employed 100 people. Hudden was made bankrupt in 1883 and around 1884 the works were taken over and became "British Anchor Pottery Co. Ltd."
