Plate, 9.5 inches diameter. Black transfer with polychrome clobbering. Printed and impressed maker's marks for C. Hobson & Son. This simple pattern features three motifs of slender stems with clusters of flowers and buds along with grasses placed around the well. The largest cluster also has a folding fan decorated with a ribbon superimposed.
Charles Hobson had been a partner in the pottery firm Morgan, Wood & Co., but in 1885 he left the partnership and bought the Albert Street Pottery from the short lived Dix & Tundley who had gone out of business the year before. It was about 1873 that one of his sons joined the business and '& Son' was added to the name. On Charles Hobson’s death, his two sons George and John continued the business.
