Tray, 15 x 9.75 inches. Brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for S. & P., which could be William Henry Skelson & William Plant of the New Market Works in Longton, c. 1868-1892. It could also be Stubbs & Plant of the New Market Works in Longton, c. 1864-1867. There was also a Swan & Poulson on Amicable Street in Tunstall in 1884. The pattern name "Khartoum" is most likely a reference to Sudan's capital city. The central feature in this pattern is the broad ribbon cartouche extending from the top of the platter to the bottom and encloses a rectangular cartouche with a deer and fawn. The ribbon is comprised of geometric zigzags, semi-circles and triangular cartouches, as well as leaves and flowers. On either side of the ribbon are flowers, leaves and round cartouches.
